4. T & R TAVERN
A true Saigon dive, T & R is a filthy smoke-filled delight. Just off Bui Vien, this narrow den of depravity is set back from the street and can be a bit tough to find. However, once you make your way through the brick archway, you might not leave, at least not until you can see the sun. The crowd consists of travelers stopping through and salty old expats. This is the type of place where the truth never seems to get in the way of a good story. The beer is reasonably priced and the drinks could kill a horse. Stop by after midnight, suck up the second-hand smoke, and have a real Saigon experience.
If you are staying in District 1, you simply must spend some time at T&R. As most of the other reviews point out, it is a very friendly place without all of the annoyances of your typical backpacker-district bar.
The bartenders are friendly and good at their jobs. The manager, Trung, has become a good friend of mine after my having visited Saigon for two consecutive summers. In fact, he and I just had dinner this evening! The customers that visit are always having a great time, and that’s mostly because the music is always great and the company is always enjoyable.
They have a pool table, and while it isn’t brand new it’s always fun to put your name on the board and play whomever won the last game. Singles or doubles games are usually an option, and the sticks are in good shape
